I won’t name names, but my wife and I ordered wings from a familiar Memphis wing joint last week. They were garbage. In fact, all wings are garbage in comparison to Ching’s Wings. I’m not certain as to why Ching’s is so freaking delicious, but they are.
About five years ago, my younger brother told me about Ching’s. I didn’t believe him when he told me about the deliciousness of what Ching’s had to offer. I was reluctant to try Ching’s–boy was I wrong.
It’s okay, take a minute, it’s a lot to take in…
Not only is the food a lot to take in, but so is the atmosphere. Upon arrival to Ching’s, you’ll immediately notice the 20+ HD televisions that line the walls of Ching’s. Depending on what time of the day you venture out to Ching’s, you may be in for a long wait (the TVs help the time go by). When I go, I try to go before 5, or after 8; if you do go during the rush, you may have a thirty to forty minute wait on your hands. Don’t fret though, call your order in ahead of time, and it’ll be ready by the time you get there.
I’m finding it hard to put the excellence of Ching’s into words, so I’ll let other Memphians help me out.
Thomas Robinson, of Eat Local Memphis, refers to Ching’s as the “kings of wings.”
Stacey Greenberg , contributor to Memphis Flyer, claims, “that Ching’s motto, ‘Best Damn Wings Period,’ is spot on.”
Some people don’t go just for the wings though. Their fries are some of the best I’ve ever had.
The guys over at BestMemphisBurger enjoyed the fries as much as I do:
“The surprise favorite of my lunch was the french fries. Nothing fancy here, just crinkle-cut fries, but damn, they’re awesome. They were fried nice and crisp and seasoned to perfection.”
Possibly one of the strongest endorsements comes from Michael, on a comment from an I Love Memphis post:
“As a Memphian attending college in Nashville, the thing I miss more than anything else, more than Central Barbque, more than Molly’s La Casita, more than Huey’s or even Jerry’s, is Ching’s Wings. That place has basically been part of my life. It is by far my favorite wing place that I have ever attended…”
Not matter what you order off the menu, make sure you get an “Orange Mound Punch” or “G Street Punch.” These highly sugarized kool-aids are a perfect counterbalance to the saltiness of the wings and fries.
The only downside to Ching’s lies in their operations. Their staff is mainly comprised of high school students, and they aren’t always on the ball. The ordering process can be chaotic, but again, totally worth it. With some proper training and guidance, the restaurant could run a little more smoothly.
